Sustainability
Yara’s mission is to responsibly feed the world and protect the planet.
According to the UN, 9 million people die every year from hunger1. Without fertiliser, that number would have been much worse. Half the world's population has food on their plates thanks to mineral fertiliser.
But food alone is not sufficient. Clean air to breathe is as fundamental a need.
Air Quality
According to the UN, air pollution is the second leading risk factor for death globally, contributing to approximately 8.1 million premature deaths each year from conditions such as stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.2
That’s more lives lost every year than COVID-19 caused over five years.
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are a major contributor to smog, acid rain, and respiratory illnesses. AdBlue® diesel exhaust fluid helps convert these harmful NOx emissions from diesel engines into harmless water vapour and nitrogen. A critical tool in the fight for clean air to breathe.
Yara is the world’s largest producer of AdBlue® diesel exhaust fluid
Climate
As good as it is for improved air quality – AdBlue is not a cure for all ills. It does not, for instance, address the greenhouse gas issue.
On the contrary, AdBlue® diesel exhaust fluid itself contains CO2. Made, as it is from water and urea – itself a derivative of ammonia and CO2 – that cannot be escaped.
Even so, there are ways in which we may reduce its carbon footprint.
Pioneering LowerCarbon Ammonia for Sustainable AdBlue
The sustainability of AdBlue is directly linked to the sustainability of the ammonia used to make it. As a global leader in ammonia production, Yara is rapidly scaling two key pathways to deliver lowcarbon ammonia:
- Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
Yara is a first mover in industrial CCS. At our Sluiskil plant in the Netherlands, we will operate Europe’s largest carbon capture project. Once commissioned in 2026, it will capture 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually for permanent offshore storage. - Green Ammonia via Renewable Energy
At out Porsgrunn plant in Norway, we commissioned Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant in 2024. The 24 MW facility cuts 41,000 tons of CO2 annually, allowing for outputs with up to 95% lower carbon footprint. We are partnering globally to create renewable, “green” ammonia. - Ammonia from renewable Natural Gas (RNG)
At our Cubatão plant in Brazil we started transitioning to 100% renewable ammonia made from biomethane in 2024.
And the CO2 necessary to make urea we can source from already existing biogenic sources. This makes us able to reduce the AdBlue carbon footprint to an absolute minimum
A Must for Modern Mobility
AdBlue® diesel exhaust fluid is not just about clean air, it’s essential for mobility. Trucks, buses, delivery vans, passenger cars, and off-road machinery all rely on it.
Without AdBlue®, transport, agriculture, and construction sectors around the world would quickly grind to a halt. Supermarket and pharmacy shelves would stand empty, taxi lines would stretch endlessly, the plumber and electrician wouldn’t arrive, and construction sites would fall silent. Much of everyday life, as we know it, would simply stop.
Air1® – AdBlue® diesel exhaust fluid by Yara – meets the strict ISO 22241 quality standard, ensuring on-spec attributes, SCR system protection, and optimal engine performance.
