Our European footprint
We’re well positioned to become the leading partner for European farmers and food companies by providing sustainable farming solutions that also deliver superior economic performance:
Scale and reach
We have the scale and reach that’s needed to drive the sustainable agriculture transformation in Europe and develop innovative solutions, just as we have for over a century. We’re the largest crop nutrition company in Europe. We have an integrated organization with more than 6,800 employees in Europe working across the entire supply chain, including agronomy, sales, production, and distribution, supporting customers in over 30 European countries.
Complete offering
We provide a complete offering of solutions, including agronomic advice, digital tools, and crop nutrition products. This gives farmers a one-stop shop for their farming needs. Our European portfolio of around 500 crop nutrition products covers all crops grown in Europe, offering farmers tailored solutions to meet the specific needs of their crops and growing conditions.
Farmer connectivity
We’re in the field every day providing expert agronomic advice and precision farming solutions to both smallholder and professional farmers all over Europe. Our intimate farmer connectivity enables us to better understand and meet the needs of farmers. Our ambition is to have around 20% of farmland in Europe connected to our digital tools.
Low-carbon farming
We help farmers preserve and enhance soil health as well as reduce their carbon footprints by advising them on how to balance crop nutrition, tailor fertilizer applications according to crop needs, use precision farming tools, and select the most suitable fertilizers. Nitrate-based fertilizers have among the lowest carbon footprints and ammonia emissions compared to other alternatives such as urea or ammonium fertilizers.
Low-carbon production
Yara is the biggest producer of nitrate-based mineral fertilizers in Europe. Production of nitrate fertilizers in Europe has on average the lowest carbon footprint in the world, helped by a catalyst technology that Yara developed and has since been shared with the rest of the industry. This technology has enabled Yara to reduce fertilizer production emissions from nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas (GHG), by more than 90 percent and lower our direct GHG emissions in Europe by 55 percent since 2005.
Science-based research
Yara is a science-based and purpose-driven company. We’re continuously developing new innovative solutions to expand our reach and offerings, backed by world-class crop nutrition research conducted at Yara’s R&D center in Hanninghof, Germany, and our research farm in Kotkaniemi, Finland. We are actively investing in growing clean ammonia production, which will enable the hydrogen economy with the aim to establish green ammonia production within 2 to 4 years in Norway and the Netherlands with commercial-sized pilots. In addition, we're set to establish the first large-scale European green ammonia project in Norway, targeting green ammonia opportunities for the fertilizer and shipping sectors.
Reducing our carbon footprint
- Yara is well-positioned to meet the EU target for cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 55% by 2030. We’ve already reduced our total scope 1 and 2* GHG emissions globally by about 45% and in Europe by about 55% since 2005.
- Our goal is to reduce our global emissions by a total of around 60% by 2030, and we aim to be climate neutral by 2050.
*Scope 1: direct GHG emissions; Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased electricity
Yara is the market leader in Europe, supported by an unrivaled production system and supply chain network
